Frequently Asked Questions

Average washer repair cost is about $160. Replacing a leaky washer drain hose may only cost around $120, while washer gear case replacement typically can cost more than $300. Replacing a water-level sensor is one of the most common washer repairs — costing an average of $150.

When your washer is less than 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the cost of buying a new washing machine, it’s typically more economical to repair the washer. Many washer repairs cost less than $150, so you’ll often want to repair the washing machine rather than replace it.

Read about simple troubleshooting tips for a washer that won’t start.

There are several red flags that indicate your washing machine might need repair. These include strange noises during the spin cycle, water leakage around the machine, or issues with the door not locking properly. Additionally, if the machine struggles to drain, doesn't spin, or stops mid-cycle, it’s time to consult a professional repair technician.

Regular appliance maintenance is key to avoiding unexpected breakdowns. Keep an eye out for small warning signs, such as unusual sounds or poor drainage, which can often be fixed before they turn into major issues.

Also, ensure you’re loading the machine correctly and cleaning out filters and drain hoses periodically.

Scheduling routine checkups with a professional repair service can help catch potential problems early.

Expert Repair Tips

  1. Open the door and close it firmly to ensure it's closed properly.

  2. Confirm that it’s receiving power. If lights on the display don’t turn on when you press them, reset the breaker and try again.

  3. If your house has a fuse panel, check to see if the fuse has blown and replace it if necessary.

  4. Make sure the washer is plugged directly into a power outlet and not into an extension cord.

  1. Be sure clothes are evenly distributed in the washer.

  2. Mix smaller items of the same fabric type with larger items to help balance the load.

  3. Be careful not to overload the washer—remove some items and redistribute the remaining pieces.

  4. Check the display and ensure the Child Lock or Safety Lock isn’t on.

  5. Make sure the washer has all four feet on the ground and doesn't rock if you lean on it.

  1. Use a flashlight to find the source of the leak to ensure it's coming from the washer and not from a pipe or other appliance nearby.

  2. Make sure hose connections are tight and that a well-fitting washer is installed. If necessary, replace washers and tighten all hoses using pliers.

  3. Washers can leak when they're not level. If the washer doesn't have all four feet on the ground or rocks when you lean on it, adjust the feet until it's level.

The most likely cause is something lodged in the drain pump or the hose that connects to the drain pump.

  1. Check for small items, like socks, jewelry and anything else you may have left in your pockets, in the hose.

  2. Clear the obstruction.

If the obstruction is in the drain pump, you may notice squealing or grinding noises and sometimes a burning rubber smell.
If everything looks good with the drain pump and hose, lid issues may be the culprit. If the lid assembly doesn’t create a closed circuit, it won’t work properly, resulting in your washer not draining.
