Common washer repair parts you may need

Replacing one of these washer parts may fix your problem.

Electronic Control Board Replacement

If the washer doesn't wash, it could be due to a malfunctioning electronic control board. This component controls vital functions such as the water valve and cycle status display. Without it functioning properly, the washer may not initiate the wash cycle. Additionally, the washer may not fill, agitate, spin, or drain.

Actuator Replacement

A defective washer actuator, also referred to as the shifter assembly, can lead to challenges or an inability for the washer drive system to transition between various cycles or modes. Consequently, the washing machine may become stuck in a particular phase of the laundry process, impeding its progression through the entire cycle. Operational noises like grinding or clicking may occur, signaling a malfunctioning actuator. Furthermore, a faulty actuator may hinder proper agitation or spinning of the washer, impacting overall washing effectiveness. In certain instances, a malfunctioning actuator can cause the washing machine to either fail to complete the cycle or halt abruptly.

Gearcase Replacement

If a washer gearcase is seized, obvious indications will include grinding or rumbling noises during the agitation or spin cycles. Rotation in the drum will become erratic or jerky, or it may not turn at all, hindering the progression of the wash, rinse, and spin cycles. There may also be evidence of overheating or a burning smell. A service professional should replace a seized gearcase.

Why is my washing machine not washing my clothes properly?

Many components come into play to move the agitator and wash clothes in your washing machine. A problem with any of them could prevent the agitator from working.

Worn Agitator Dogs

The agitator dogs engage with teeth inside the agitator to create a one-way ratcheting motion in the upper part of the agitator. That one-way motion at the top of the agitator combines with the back-and-forth motion at the bottom to move garments through the water during the agitation cycle. If the top part of the agitator moves in two directions, the agitator dogs are likely worn out and you’ll need to replace them.

If you’re not completely confident that you can replace the agitator dogs on your own, schedule washer repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to install them.

Broken Lid Switch

On many top-load washers, the lid switch must detect that the washer lid is closed before the washer will agitate. Unplug the washer and check the lid switch. Replace it if it’s broken or damaged.

Here’s a video that shows how to replace the lid switch in a common type of top-load washer:

If you’re unable to replace the lid switch on your own, schedule service and we’ll send a repair technician to your home to install a new lid switch.

Other Causes of a Washer Not Washing

Problems with the water level pressure switch, the drive block or a faulty gearcase can also prevent a washer from agitating and washing properly.

When you’re unable to determine the cause of the agitation failure on your own, schedule washer repair service and we’ll send a technician to your home to fix the machine.

What to expect when you experience a washer not washing issue

What is the solution to a not washing problem?

Although there could be many reasons a washer won't wash, the problem is most commonly resolved by replacing the electronic control board, actuator or gearcase. Thorough troubleshooting is essential for both an accurate diagnosis and repair cost.

Tips from our experts if your washer is not washing

If the washer is not washing, it can stem from various reasons. To avoid replacing unneeded parts, we recommend scheduling washer repair with a Sears Home Services professional who can perform diagnostic tests to identify the root cause of the problem. Our technicians possess expertise in diagnosing a wide range of washer malfunctions.

Things to be aware of with a washer not washing diagnosis

Diagnosing washer problems without adequate knowledge and training can be challenging. Attempting repairs without employing proper diagnostic techniques often results in guesswork-based part replacements. Modern washers are equipped with complex electronic components that are challenging to test, making DIY repairs difficult.

If your washer fills but never agitates or spins, broken drive components or motor issues likely cause the inaction. Clothes remain unclean despite water. Rather than wasted cycles, schedule local washer repair. Once fully operational, your laundry emerges truly refreshed.
