Most common repairs needed to fix a Jenn-Air freezer

Electronic Control Board Replacement

A malfunctioning electronic control board can keep the light from working in your freezer. The electronic control board receives a signal from the freezer door switch when you open the door and the control board should send current to the freezer light. A failed relay or corrupted internal logic on the circuit board can prevent the electronic control board from sending current to the light. When the freezer light is not working, have a Sears Home Services Technician visit your home and fix the problem. The technician will replace the electronic control board if it’s bad.

LED Light Assembly Replacement

When the light is not working in your freezer, you may need to replace a broken LED light assembly. The LED light assembly includes a circuit board and the LED lights that illuminate the inside of the freezer. When the circuit board fails, the LED lights won’t turn on. Replacing the LED light assembly can be complicated in some freezers. When the light isn’t working in your freezer, have a Sears Home Services Technician visit your home and fix the problem.

Power Supply Board Replacement

If the power supply board is bad, the freezer will not power up. The freezer won’t cool and the interior and display lights won’t work. If the freezer is equipped with an electronic door lock, the lock will fail to engage and the door may not close completely. This is because the power supply in a freezer connects the incoming power from your home’s electrical supply to the components inside the freezer. It also sends power from the control board to the freezer. A defective power supply board may also fail to protect the freezer from power surges, potentially causing damage to electronic components like the main control board. If your freezer is not powering up, have a Sears Home Services professional inspect it and replace the power supply board if necessary.

Sears Home Services recommendations for a freezer light that is not working

When the freezer light is not working it can be for many reasons. To avoid replacing unneeded parts we recommend having a Sears Home Services professional perform diagnostic tests to identify the root cause of the problem. Our technicians are experienced at diagnosing all types of freezer failures.

What to look out for with a freezer light not working diagnosis

Diagnosing modern appliances without proper knowledge and training can be difficult. Without using proper diagnostic techniques, fixing your freezer problem will only be achieved through changing parts on a hunch. Appliances, especially in the last 10 years, have become extremely advanced, and many models have electronic parts that are difficult to test. DIY repairs on the latest appliance models are becoming increasingly difficult.

Why is the light not working in my freezer?

A burned out light bulb or faulty LED light board could prevent the freezer light from working. A bad freezer light switch, wiring failure or bad light socket could also cause the problem.

Troubleshooting a problem with a freezer light bulb not working

Replace the light bulb when you have a light bulb in the freezer and the light isn’t working.

If replacing the light bulb doesn’t fix the problem, check the freezer door switch.

Unplug the freezer and remove the freezer door switch as shown in this DIY video:

With the switch lever or plunger extended to simulate the door being open, measure resistance through the door switch spades using a multimeter.

You should measure near 0 ohms of resistance through the switch. If you measure infinite resistance, replace the switch because it’s bad.

If the freezer door switch is okay, a bad light socket or wiring failure is likely preventing the light from working in your freezer.

Troubleshooting a problem with a freezer LED light assembly not working

If you only have one LED light assembly in your freezer and it’s not working, or you have 2 LED light assemblies and both aren’t working, then a failed door switch could be causing the problem.

Test the door switch as described in the section above and replace the door switch if it’s bad.

If one of the LED light assemblies works and one doesn’t, or the door switch is okay, then you may have a bad LED light assembly.

Unplug the freezer to disconnect electrical power.

Pull the LED light assembly out and inspect it. Here’s a video that shows how to remove an LED light assembly:

If you see a burned spot or damage on the LED circuit board, replace the LED light assembly.

If your freezer uses 2 identical LED light assemblies, install the identical light assembly in the position of the light assembly that isn’t working. If the identical LED light assembly works, then you know that the non-working LED light assembly is bad – replace it.

If the identical LED light board doesn’t work in the non-working housing or you don’t see damage to a single LED light assembly in your freezer, then a wiring failure or a bad control board could be causing the lighting failure.

Schedule freezer repair service to have a Sears Home Services technician examine and repair the lighting when you’re unable to diagnose and fix the problem yourself.
