Most common repairs needed to fix a GE dryer

    Timer Replacement

When your dryer is not working, a defective timer could be causing the failure. The timer has internal cams that open and close switches or contacts to operate the various electro-mechanical components in the dryer, mainly the drive motor and the heating element. If the timer is defective, it won’t start the drive motor. When your dryer won’t start, have a Sears Home Services Technician examine the dryer and replace the timer if it’s defective.

    Door Switch Replacement

If your dryer is not working, a failed door switch could be causing the problem. The door switch detects when the dryer door is shut. A failed door switch won’t sense whether the door is closed properly. The dryer won’t start even through the door is closed when the door switch is bad. Have a Sears Home Services Technician check your dryer when it won’t start. The technician will replace the door switch if it is defective.

    Drum Belt Replacement

When your dryer is not working, a broken drum belt could be causing the problem. The drum belt wraps around the dryer drum and connects to the drive motor pulley. The drive motor rotates the belt to spin the drum. Over time, the drum belt becomes worn and can break. A switch on the idler pulley prevents the motor from starting when it senses that the drive belt is broken. When the dryer won’t start, have a Sears Home Services Technician check your dryer and replace the drum belt if it’s broken.

GE Dryer Will Not Start Troubleshooting

When your GE dryer will not start, press in on the door firmly to make sure that the door switch engages so the control senses that the door is fully shut. The dryer won’t work if the door isn’t closed.

If the door is fully shut, a bad door switch could be preventing the dryer from starting. A service technician is typically needed to test the door switch with a meter to determine if the switch is working properly. The technician will replace the door switch if it isn’t properly detecting the door position. Schedule dryer repair service if you suspect that a bad door switch when your GE dryer will not start.

Another problem that can prevent your GE dryer from starting is a blown thermal fuse. The thermal fuse senses exhaust air temperature in a front load dryer and trips if exhaust air temperature is too high. This protects the dryer from overheating and damaging clothing. The number 1 reason for a thermal fuse tripping is a blockage in the exhaust air vent system. Unplug the dryer and check the flexible vent hose behind the dryer for a kink or clog. Clear lint from that flexible vent hose and make sure it isn’t kinked or crushed when you move the dryer back into position in your laundry room. Check the exhaust air duct system going to the outside of your home and clear any clogs in that system. Make sure that the damper on the vent cover at the outside of your home opens freely to let out the exhaust air. Make sure that you clean the lint screen before starting each load. Wash the lint screen monthly with water to remove residue so air flows freely through the screen. Taking these steps to clear the exhaust vent system before replacing a blown thermal fuse will help prevent the new fuse from blowing again shortly after replacing it. Keep your GE dryer working by cleaning and maintaining the exhaust vent system regularly.

Other problems that can prevent your GE dryer from starting and working is a failed timer, bad electronic control board, broken drive belt, bad drive motor or a wiring failure. When you’re unable to determine the cause of the problem when your GE dryer will not start, schedule dryer repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician directly to your home to fix the problem.
