Most common repairs needed to fix a Whirlpool washer
Suspension Rod Replacement
When the suspension rod in the washer is damaged, worn or broken, the wash tub will vibrate excessively and may bang loudly against the sides of the washer cabinet. This is because the suspension rod will no longer have the ability to support or stabilize the tub. A damaged or worn suspension rod can lead to excessive damage to other components of the washer, so have a Sears Home Services technician inspect the washer and replace the rod if needed.
Electronic Control Board Replacement
A malfunctioning electronic control board can lead to various failures in a washer. This is because the board serves as the brain of the washer, controlling crucial components such as the water valve, drive motor, drain pump, and cycles. If the electronic control board fails, the washer may not power up or display the cycle status. Additionally, it might fail to fill, agitate, spin, or drain. In some cases, a shorted board may emit a burning smell.
Fan Replacement
The fan ventilates the washer tub to help prevent smells, mold and mildew in the washer. A dead fan will cause odor to build up quickly inside the washer tub. Mold and mildew can develop inside the washer tub and around the door boot when the fan stops running after the spin cycles ends. Vibration from the washer could indicate a problem with a fan bearing or fan blade, and should be examined by a Sears Home Services professional.
Why is my Whirlpool washer vibrating so much?
Level the washer properly
Vibrating in your Whirlpool washer is often caused by unstable leveling legs. Carefully follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to make sure that the washer is level and stable.
To check for stability, press down firmly on the diagonally opposing corner of the washer. If you detect even a little bit of play, adjust the leveling legs to eliminate that play and keep the washer stable.
Install non-skid pads
Some floor surfaces are too slippery to prevent the washer from moving on the floor during heavily unbalanced loads. While it is normal for an occasional load to be out of balance, excess noise and vibration can result from the washer moving out of position.
If you encounter these conditions, follow the instructions shown above for installation of the non-skid pads. These pads will help prevent the washer from moving and vibrating excessively during the spin cycle.
Front-load washer vibrating
For a front-load Whirlpool washer, the machine will thump and shake significantly at the beginning of the spin cycle as the vibration reduction system begins to balance the load for high-speed spinning.
A heavy load or a bulky item in the load can cause longer thumping and shaking noises at the start of the spin cycle.
Once the front-load washer balances the load and begins spinning at high speed, the thumping and shaking should stop.
If your washer continues to shake violently during the entire time that the washer tries to spin the load, stop the washer and rebalance the load and/or remove some items so the washer will spin normally.
If tip doesn’t help, then a bad shock absorber or suspension spring could be causing the shaking problem. Schedule washer repair service to have the machine examined and repaired by a Sears Home Services technician.

Sears Home Services recommendations for a washer that vibrates
When the washer vibrates it can be for many reasons. To avoid replacing unneeded parts we recommend having a Sears Home Services professional perform diagnostic tests to identify the root cause of the problem. Our technicians are experienced at diagnosing all types of washer failures.
What to look out for with a washer vibrates diagnosis
Diagnosing modern appliances without proper knowledge and training can be difficult. Without using proper diagnostic techniques, fixing your washer problem will only be achieved through changing parts on a hunch. Appliances, especially in the last 10 years, have become extremely advanced, and many models have electronic parts that are difficult to test. DIY repairs on the latest appliance models are becoming increasingly difficult.
Excessive vibrations in a Whirlpool washer usually point to worn shock absorbers or an unbalanced drum. Ignoring the shaking can strain internal parts. Rather than risking more damage, contact a washer technician near me. Stability fixes maintain quiet, reliable operation for every load.
