Electronic Control Board Replacement
When the cooktop is not working, a defective electronic control board could be failing to send current to surface elements. Electrical relays close contacts to send current to a burner when you set a burner to heat. When the internal logic or internal circuits in the electronic control board fail, current won’t flow to the burners. When your cooktop has power but none of the elements work, have a Sears Home Services Technician check the electronic control board and replace it if it’s defective.
Igniter Replacement
A broken igniter prevent burners from lighting on the cooktop. Some cooktops use an ignition system that reignites burners when the control doesn’t detect a flame on a burner in use. When a cooktop uses electronics to sense a burner flame, a broken igniter can short out electronics or damage other components in the burner ignition system so the cooktop won’t work. Have a Sears Home Services Appliance Repair Technician examine and repair your cooktop when it isn’t working.
Infinite Switch Replacement
When the cooktop is not working, you may find that the problem is caused by a faulty infinite switch. The infinite switch has electrical contacts that turn a surface element on and off and controls the heat level of the element. When internal switch contacts short out, the electrical circuit breaker will trip and prevent the cooktop from getting power. When you’re unable to reset the circuit breaker because it trips again as soon as try to reset it, you can suspect that faulty infinite switch may be preventing the cooktop from working. Check for electrical power
Reset the house circuit breaker for the cooktop. This may restore electrical power so the cooktop begins working again.
If you have a gas cooktop, check the electrical outlet using this process:
- Unplug the cooktop power cord.
- Plug a nightlight or small appliance into the electrical outlet to check for power.
If the electrical outlet is dead, have an electrician fix the issue.
If the outlet has power, you’ll likely need to have a service technician repair the cooktop failure.
Check the gas supply
For a gas cooktop that has electrical power but burners won’t light, check the gas supply cut-off valve to make sure that it’s fully open.
Check the gas supply for other gas appliances in your home. If your entire home is without a gas supply, contact your gas supplier to fix that problem.
Replace the spark module
When your gas cooktop has power but the burners won’t spark to ignite when you turn on a burner, you may need to replace the spark igniter.
The spark module receives a signal from the burner switches and sends voltage to the igniter electrodes to make them spark to ignite the surface burner. If the spark module isn't sending voltage to the burners, replace the spark module.
