Most common repairs needed to fix a GE Profile washer

Electronic Control Board Replacement

A malfunctioning electronic control board can lead to various failures in a washer. This is because the board serves as the brain of the washer, controlling crucial components such as the water valve, drive motor, drain pump, and cycles. If the electronic control board fails, the washer may not power up or display the cycle status. Additionally, it might fail to fill, agitate, spin, or drain. In some cases, a shorted board may emit a burning smell.

Motor Replacement

A broken washer motor will prevent the spin basket from rotating or agitating, and can also cause a variety of other issues that affect the washer’s ability to function properly. Signs that the motor is wearing out include unusual noises during operation, such as grinding or squealing sounds. The washer may also exhibit erratic spinning or agitation, with clothes not being properly rinsed or still soaking wet after the spin cycle. Additionally, a worn-out motor may lead to the washer not completing its cycles, stopping abruptly, or not starting at all. Burnt smells or overheating around the motor area can be indicative of internal problems. In some cases, visible damage to the motor itself may be apparent.

Door Lock Assembly Replacement

When a washer door lock assembly is jammed, you may encounter difficulty in opening or closing the washer door. The door may not latch properly, leading to issues in starting or completing a wash cycle. The washer might display an error code indicating a door lock problem. During operation, the door lock may make unusual clicking sounds or fail to engage, preventing the washer from starting. Additionally, if there is a malfunction, the door lock indicator light may not illuminate as expected. Users might notice water remaining in the drum even after the wash cycle has finished, indicating a potential problem with the door lock assembly preventing proper drainage.

GE Profile Washer Won’t Spin Troubleshooting

GE Profile washer won’t spin troubleshooting starts with making sure that the lid is properly closed on a top-load washer. Many GE Profile top-load washing machines won’t advance into the spin cycle if the lid is open to prevent injuries when using the washer. Press down on the washer lid to make sure it closes properly and the lid switch detects that the lid is shut and the washer may begin spinning.

If a top-load GE Profile washer won’t spin with the lid properly shut, a bad lid switch, wiring failure, failed control board, bad timer or problem with the drive motor could be causing the issue. Schedule washer repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to diagnose and fix the problem when your GE Profile washer won’t spin.

When a front-load GE Profile washer won’t spin, a problem with the door shutting properly could cause the problem on some models. Press in on the washer door to make sure that it is fully closed. The door on a front-load GE Profile washer also has to be locked for the spin cycle to work. A failed door lock/switch assembly could be the problem when a front-load GE Profile washer won’t spin. Have a service technician examine the washer and fix the door lock/switch assembly if it’s broken.

Other failures that cause error codes or fault codes can also prevent a GE Profile front-load washer from spinning. What would cause my GE washer to not spin?

Component failures such as failed lid or door switch, drive system problems or drain issues can prevent your GE washer from spinning.

For some GE top-load washers, you’ll need to reset the motor to resolve the spin failure.

How to reset the motor on a GE top-load washer

For certain GE and GE Profile top-load washer manufactured between 2011 and 2015, you’ll need to reset the motor when problems occur that interrupt motor operation such as lid switch problems, an unbalanced load, overloading the washer, power surge through the electrical lines supplying your home or drive system problems.

Drive motors in these GE and GE Profile washers differ from motor in most top-load washers because they have an inverter control board mounted directly on top of the motor (see image below). When a problem occurs, the inverter control board detects the problem and flashes its green LED light in a pattern to indicate an error code.

Here’s a list of the error codes for that system: GE Top-Load Washer Inverter Board Error Codes.

You won’t be able to see that LED light unless you remove the front washer panel, which is dangerous when the washer is still plugged in. Just be aware of what’s happening to you can understand how you can sometimes reset the inverter control to get the washer working again.

Once an error occurs, the motor won’t work until the cause of the code is resolved and you reset the motor inverter control board.

For error codes caused by an unbalanced load, overloading or a power surge through the electrical lines, resetting inverter board will fix the spin failure because the problem causing the code is resolved.

Reset the inverter control board on the motor by following these steps:

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait until you hear a click when the inverter control capacitor discharges (about 15 seconds). You can wait longer (a minute or two) if you don’t hear the click.
  3. Plug the washer back into the outlet and then open and close the washer lid 5 times in a 12-second period within the first 30 seconds of power up.

Here’s a video that provides more information on resetting the inverter control board in a GE top-load washer:

If you’re unable to reset the inverter control board on your GE top-load washer or need to have it serviced, schedule a washer repair appointment and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to fix the machine.
