Most common repairs needed to fix a LG refrigerator
Defrost Drain Replacement
When the defrost drain is clogged, frost and ice melting from the evaporator fins during the defrost cycle won’t be able to drain away, causing an overflow of water in the drain pan and leading to water leaking underneath the refrigerator. To prevent potential damage to the floor and refrigerator if leaks are noticed, have a Sears Home Services professional inspect the refrigerator to address and rectify the clogged defrost drain promptly.
Dispenser Water Tubing Replacement
Cracked refrigerator dispenser water tubing will result in water leaking around the dispenser area, leading to puddles or moisture accumulation on the exterior of the refrigerator. This leakage can result in decreased water flow to the dispenser. You might also notice water dripping from the dispenser nozzle or pooling in the dispenser tray. In some cases, a crack in the tubing can introduce contaminants or compromise the water's purity, affecting its taste and odor. Promptly addressing a cracked water tube with a Sears Home Services professional is crucial in preventing possible water damage.
Evaporator Replacement
A damaged refrigerator evaporator causes a decrease in overall cooling performance, leading to elevated temperatures in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. These higher temperatures can result in food spoilage and less effective preservation of frozen items. Frost or ice buildup on the evaporator coils may hinder their ability to absorb heat efficiently. Excessive condensation inside the refrigerator can lead to leaks. Additionally, a damaged evaporator may cause unusual noises, such as hissing or gurgling sounds, during the refrigeration cycle.
What to expect when you experience an LG refrigerator leaking water issue
How is the leaking water problem fixed?
Correcting most leaking water problems usually involves replacing the defrost drain, dispenser water tubing or evaporator. However, there are many potential causes, so a thorough diagnosis is key to fixing the problem. An accurate diagnosis is essential to understanding how much the repair will be.

What to look out for with a refrigerator leaking water diagnosis
Diagnosing modern appliances without proper knowledge and training can be difficult. Without using proper diagnostic techniques, fixing your refrigerator problem will only be achieved through changing parts on a hunch. Appliances, especially in the last 10 years, have become extremely advanced, and many models have electronic parts that are difficult to test. DIY repairs on the latest appliance models are becoming increasingly difficult.
LG Refrigerator Leaking Water from the Door
When you find your LG refrigerator leaking water from the door, follow these expert tips to find and repair the source of the leak.
- When water is dripping from the water dispenser and you just replace the water filter, air trapped in the water dispenser supply line is likely causing the leak. Purge 1 gallon of water as constantly as possible through the water dispenser to get rid of air in the water lines and prevent the leak.
- Water leaking from the bottom of the door could be caused by a cracked or damaged water line or water fitting. Examine the visible water lines and connections going into the door. If you find damaged water lines, schedule refrigerator repair service to have a Sears Home Services technician replace the leaking parts.
- Some LG refrigerators house the water filter in the door. Check the water filter housing for damage or leaking. If the water filter housing is leaking, have a service technician replace that part.
Fixing an LG Refrigerator Leaking Water Inside
When you find water leaking inside your LG refrigerator, follow these steps to find and fix the problem.
- If your LG refrigerator is leaking water inside the freezer, a frozen defrost drain tube could be causing the leak. The back panel of the freezer that covers the evaporator and defrost drain tube is difficult to remove in most LG refrigerators so you’ll likely need to have a service technician fix this problem. You may be able to stop the leak for a week or so by safely storing food and manually defrosting the freezer so the ice plug melts in the defrost drain tube. To manually defrost the freezer, unplug the refrigerator or turn off cooling and open the freezer and refrigerator doors. Wait 4 hours and then plug the refrigerator power cord back in or turn on cooling at the controls.
- Check the ice maker for a leak. A cracked or damaged ice mold could be leaking water. Water overfilling the ice mold can also cause water to leak from the ice maker. If the ice mold is overfilling with water, follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to reduce the water fill level in the icemaker to prevent the leak. If you’re unable to resolve the problem with the icemaker leaking on your own, schedule refrigerator repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to fix the problem.
- Check the water filter for a leak. Make sure the water filter if properly installed in the housing. If the water filter housing is damaged and leaking, have a service technician replace the housing.
