Most common repairs needed to fix a LG washer

Suspension Rod Replacement

When the suspension rod in the washer is damaged, worn or broken, the wash tub will vibrate excessively and may bang loudly against the sides of the washer cabinet. This is because the suspension rod will no longer have the ability to support or stabilize the tub. A damaged or worn suspension rod can lead to excessive damage to other components of the washer, so have a Sears Home Services technician inspect the washer and replace the rod if needed.

Why is my washer noisy or shaking?

Electronic Control Board Replacement

A malfunctioning electronic control board can lead to various failures in a washer. This is because the board serves as the brain of the washer, controlling crucial components such as the water valve, drive motor, drain pump, and cycles. If the electronic control board fails, the washer may not power up or display the cycle status. Additionally, it might fail to fill, agitate, spin, or drain. In some cases, a shorted board may emit a burning smell.

Fan Replacement

The fan ventilates the washer tub to help prevent smells, mold and mildew in the washer. A dead fan will cause odor to build up quickly inside the washer tub. Mold and mildew can develop inside the washer tub and around the door boot when the fan stops running after the spin cycles ends. Vibration from the washer could indicate a problem with a fan bearing or fan blade, and should be examined by a Sears Home Services professional.

Why is my LG washing machine vibrating?

Vibrations in a washer are often caused by:

  • Unbalanced load.
  • Unstable leveling feet.
  • Worn tub bearing.
  • Foreign object in the drain pump.

Other problems can also cause vibration in your washer such as suspension problems, a broken spin basket support or a worn drive belt.

Check for an unbalanced load

Severe vibration and banging is often caused by an unbalanced load.

Stop the washer and rebalance the load when you hear this type of vibration noise. Remove some of the load if the basket is overloaded. (Overloading prevents the washer from being able to balance the load.)

Here’s a helpful video that shows how to deal with an out-of-balance load in a washing machine:

If the washer bangs loudly when empty or with a balanced load, a bad suspension component such as a spring or shock absorber could be the cause of the loud noise.

Have a service technician examine and repair your washer when you suspect that a suspension component has failed.

Check for stability and adjust leveling feet if needed

If your vibrating washer is roaring like a jet plane when it spins and “walking” across the laundry room floor, then unstable leveling legs are likely causing this loud noise.

To check for stability, press down firmly on diagonally opposing corners of the washer cabinet.

If you detect slight rocking or play when pressing down on the cabinet, you’ll need to adjust the leveling legs to eliminate that play while keeping the washer level. Use a level and wrench to make the adjustments to eliminate play and level the washer.

Follow the directions in the installation guide for your washer to level the washer and stabilize it by adjusting the leveling legs.

Signs of a worn tub bearing

The vibrating noise of a worn tub bearing is similar to that of an unstable washer cabinet described above. You’ll likely hear roaring in the spin mode and you may also hear scraping metal sounds as well as banging.

The tub bearing holds the spin basket in place and stabilizes it during the spin mode and agitation or tumbling mode.

Replacing a bad tub bearing is an advanced repair that requires special tools and expertise. When you suspect that your washer has a bad tub bearing, schedule washer repair service to have a Sears Home Services technician fix the problem.

Dealing with washer vibration noise while draining

A foreign object in the washer drain pump will typically cause vibration and a loud buzzing noise while the drain pump runs.

In a front-load washer, you may be able to find the object stuck in the drain pump filter.

On some front-load washers, you can access and check that drain pump filter using the steps in this video:

If your front-load washer doesn’t have a bottom front access panel like the one shown in the video, you may be able to access the drain pump filter by removing the back washer panel and finding that pump filter under the washer tub. Unplug the washer before removing that back panel. Wear work glove to protect your hand when reaching inside the washer cabinet because metal edges inside the washer are sharp.

If you’re unable to find the drain pump filter or need to have a service technician find and fix the noise problem, schedule repair service and we’ll send a Sears Home Services technician to your home to fix the problem.

If you have a top-load washer, you can unplug the washer and follow the steps in this video to check the drain pump for a foreign object or damage:

Although we enjoy helping you find and fix washer vibration problems on your own when possible, we encourage you to be safe and have your machine professionally serviced when you’re not confident that you can find and fix a noise problem on your own. At Sears Home Services, we always here and ready to help you with any appliance repair.

What to expect when you experience an LG washer vibrates issue

How is the vibrates problem fixed?

Correcting most vibrates problems usually involves replacing the suspension rod, electronic control board or fan. However, there are many potential causes, so a thorough diagnosis is key to fixing the problem. An accurate diagnosis is essential to understanding how much the repair will be.

Sears Home Services recommendations for a washer that vibrates

When the washer vibrates it can be for many reasons. To avoid replacing unneeded parts, we recommend scheduling LG washer repair with a local Sears Home Services professional who can perform diagnostic tests to identify the root cause of the problem. Our technicians are experienced at diagnosing all types of washer failures.

What to look out for with a washer vibrates diagnosis

Diagnosing modern appliances without proper knowledge and training can be difficult. Without using proper diagnostic techniques, fixing your washer problem will only be achieved through changing parts on a hunch. Appliances, especially in the last 10 years, have become extremely advanced, and many models have electronic parts that are difficult to test. DIY repairs on the latest appliance models are becoming increasingly difficult.

An LG washer that vibrates excessively often has unbalanced loads or worn shock absorbers. These shakes can shorten the machine’s lifespan and disrupt your laundry routine. Rather than risking further damage, book a washing machine repair to stabilize each spin cycle. Sturdy operation helps your LG washer deliver consistent, gentle care for clothes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my LG washer vibrate excessively during spin cycles?
Uneven loads, an unbalanced washer, or worn shock absorbers are common culprits. Distributing clothes evenly and checking the machine’s level can help reduce vibrations.
How do I balance an LG washing machine?
Use a level tool on top of the washer. Adjust the feet until the machine is stable and each corner makes firm contact with the floor. Tighten the locking nuts once leveled.
Does overloading cause vibration in an LG washer?
Yes. Overloading or washing bulky items can throw the drum off balance. Split large loads or wash bulky items with similar-weight items to minimize shaking.
When should I call a technician for an LG washer that vibrates?
If leveling and adjusting loads doesn’t fix the issue, worn shock absorbers, springs, or suspension rods may need replacement. A qualified technician can safely replace these parts.
